Cake smash photoshoots are all about fun, mess, and capturing those priceless moments of your little one’s first birthday celebration. But before you dive into the cake, a little prep goes a long way to make the most out of this adorable chaos. Here’s your go-to guide for getting ready for a cake smash photoshoot, minus the fuss!
Before we dive into the details, let’s align on the overall vibe you’re aiming for. Are we going for a rustic feel, or perhaps something more modern and vibrant? By clarifying your preferences upfront, we can tailor the session to your taste. I consider my style to be minimalist. This allows for the attention to be on your child and not the props/background.
Now, let’s talk logistics. Think about any props you’d like to incorporate. I shoot all of my cake smash sessions in a studio where there are props available for us to use. If you have any questions about the props/what is available; please reach out!
*Any theme specific props, balloons, and cake must be provided by you.
When it comes to outfits, comfort is key. Opt for clothing that allows your little one to move freely and won’t restrict their movements during the smash. Remember, simplicity often shines brightest in photos! I recommend bringing two outfits for the session.
The first outfit can be something that is related to the theme of their party or something cute you found! For this outfit I take the “personality shots.” These shots are of your child being themselves and I focus on capturing their unique personality.
The second outfit needs to be something you are ok with getting messy (this can even just be baby in a diaper). This outfit will be what they wear during the cake smash, so prepare for it to possibly get ruined.
Since I do the cake smash portion last, your child will be a sticky mess. Bring a comfy outfit for baby to change into after the session is over and they have been cleaned up!
Choosing the right cake is crucial. Opt for something minimal. My favorite place to recommend is the local grocery store. Ask them for a plain white cake or a “naked” cake. Adding a themed cake topper from Amazon or Etsy will bring the cuteness without being overpowering.
Don’t forget to consider any dietary restrictions or allergies your child may have – safety first!
Let’s schedule the session at a time when your child is typically at their happiest and most alert. Avoid naptime or mealtime to minimize any potential meltdowns and ensure we capture those genuine smiles.
Baby may start to get crabby or irritable during the session. I keep my cake smash sessions at 20-30 minutes long for this reason.
During the smash, expect the unexpected. Encourage your little one to dive into the cake and be prepared for a messy aftermath. Sometimes, the best shots come from embracing the chaos and capturing those spontaneous moments.
Above all, let’s remember that this session is about more than just taking pictures – it’s about capturing the authentic joy and curiosity of your child as they interact with their first birthday cake. So relax, have fun, and let’s create memories that you’ll cherish for years to come.
In the end, the cake smash photoshoot isn’t just about celebrating your child’s first birthday. It’s a chance to capture the love, laughter, and pure delight that comes with being a parent.
